The Ghana Language and Culture Experience

Day 1: Arrival and pickup from the Kotoka International Airport, in Accra, Ghana (airport Code ACC). Economy Hotel in Accra.

Day 2: In the morning after registration: Lecture on Ghanaian society and culture, followed by a familiarization tour of central Accra. In the afternoon, you will visit the beach side for a time of relaxation and rest. In the evening if it is possible we will arrange for a courtesy call on the mayor of Accra.

Day 3: Morning: Lecture introduction to volunteer projects you expect to work with; Rules and regulation; dos and don?t?s for vistors to Ghana, health and safety tips; staying with host families ? dos and don?ts and expectations.
Afternoon: Sightseeing in the city of Accra; visit major attractions like the Kwame Nkrumah mausoleum, the art center, the Dubois center, University of Ghana, etc, as time allows.
Evening: Courtesy call on a traditional chief in Accra city plus cultural entertainment.

Day 4: Travel to Assin Foso in Central Region to begin the language classes and other activities.
Day 5: Twi language classes: International volunteers will learn the native Ghanaian language of Twi. In the afternoon, attend local cultural dance and try out some indigenous dance moves.
Day 6: Twi language classes continue in the morning. In the afternoon, get a lecture on Ghanaian Chieftancy system and/or learn how to make Ghanaian dishes.
Day 7: Twi language classes continue and end by mid-day. In the afternoon volunteers abroad will visit with a local Ghanaian Chief who is the head of the village. You will be able to experience how the chief relates to his/her subjects and the rest of society.
Day 8: End of Language and cultural experience. Evaluation and transfer to project placement.
